Korean letter is a combination of 1 first consonant + 1 vowel (+ 1 last consonant).

    Consonants:

    Vowels:

        ㅏ(ar), ㅑ(yar), ㅓ(er), ㅕ(yer), ㅗ(o), ㅛ(yo), ㅜ(u), ㅠ(yu), ㅡ(eu), ㅣ(i/ee)

Some of these are making similar sounds such as ㅐ(e), ㅔ(e) or ㅒ(ye), ㅖ(ye). Actually, they are slightly different but even many Korean people also can not pronounce differently and English doesn't have matching characters for those Letters.

    * Note: the English sounds '()' is my personal opinion, it can be different from the ones officially announced by National Institute of Korean Language.

Consonants for the last consonant: 28 characters

Below is the total letters combined with 1 first consonant + 1 vowel.

    19 Consonants *  21 Vowels = 399 Letters

As you can see from the above table, a vowel always positions on the right or below of the first consonant.

    And,

Korean also adds one last consonant to a letter.

    For instance,

    'b + o' is like 'ㅂ + ㅗ = 보'

    'b + o + k' is like 'ㅂ + ㅗ + ㅋ = 봌'

The last consonant always positions below other characters, such as:

    Last consonant

The total number of the possible combination with 1 first consonant + 1 vowels + 1 last consonants is:

    19 Consonants * 21 Vowels * 30 Consonants = 10,773 Letters

    So, technically, the Korean language generates 399 + 10,773 = 11,172 letters.
